Morristown has had
career firefighters since 1867. On June 15,1929 the
career division of the Morristown Fire Department
was chartered into the NJ State Fireman's Mutual
Benevolent Association (FMBA) as Local 43. FMBA
Local 43/243 is now comprised of 30 full-time career
firefighters (many who are also Emergency Medical
Technicians and/or Fire Inspectors) who proudly
serve the people of the Town of Morristown, New
Jersey.
The Morristown
Fire Department Career Division operates 4 tours
with 5-8 firefighters on duty and staffs 2 engines,
1 ladder, 1 ambulance,
1 command vehicle and 1
heavy rescue (paid for by the Department of
Homeland Security)
After the events of
September 11, 2001, law makers realized how at risk
the New York Metropolitan Area was, and started the
Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI). The UASI
program is federally funded by the Department of
Homeland Security, to protect U.S. urban areas most
prone to potential terrorist attacks. Morristown
was selected to participate in this program and took
delivery of a heavy rescue unit. This apparatus also
serves as the primary responding unit for all
in-town rescue calls. Technical training is provided
to the career staff in urban search and rescue,
building collapse, trench, and heavy rescue
techniques.
During 2010, we responded to more than 1,631 calls for
assistance. The nature of these calls included;
structure and vehicle fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle
accidents, lockout assists, elevator entrapments,
troubled aircraft landings, fire & carbon monoxide
alarm investigations and more.
